Teaching abroad is not for the weak. As someone who's been living and teaching abroad for five years, I can't help but often reflect on the journey that brought me here and the lessons I've learned along the way. Moving abroad to teach has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but that doesn't mean it's been all sunshine and rainbows. So, if you're considering taking the leap into the world of international education, let me share with you 5 things I’ve learned on this journey.
1. Cultural Adjustment Takes Time: Ah, culture shock—the good, the bad, and the ugly. One thing I've learned abroad is that adjusting to a new culture takes time. Like of course, I knew it would take time, but there are so many different layers to moving abroad that you just won’t know how to handle until you’re in it. From navigating language barriers to understanding social norms, be prepared to feel out of your element at times. It can be annoying, scary, and difficult and there will definitely be times when you'll want to go home. But the more you immerse yourself in the local culture, stay true to yourself, and embrace new experiences, the easier it gets. Don't be hard on yourself but also be honest. Teaching abroad has taught me patience, empathy, and a deeper appreciation for diversity.
2. Flexibility Is Key: I cannot stress this enough! As educators, we're used to having a certain degree of control over our classrooms. But teaching abroad often comes with its own set of challenges and surprises. Whether it's adapting to a different curriculum, teaching style, or school culture, flexibility is key. There will be times when you really just have to roll with the punches and that can be frustrating but the alternative is exhausting. Pick your battles, stay flexible and you will be successful.
3. Building a Support Network Is Vital: Moving to a new country can be daunting, especially when you're far from friends and family. That's why building a support network is vital. Whether it's connecting with fellow expat teachers, joining local community groups, or reaching out to online forums, don't be afraid to lean on others for guidance and support. Teaching abroad has introduced me to an incredible community of like-minded individuals who have become my second family. It is also where I began my therapy journey. I don't believe I would have started my healing journey if I hadn't moved abroad. Therapy became part of my support network and for that I am forever grateful.
4. The World is MUCH Bigger than your Hometown: Teaching abroad isn't just about the paycheck( for the most part)—it's about embracing the adventure that comes with living in a new country. From exploring vibrant markets to sampling exotic cuisines, take every opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and make unforgettable memories. Teaching abroad has opened my eyes to the beauty of the world and its people and sparked a sense of curiosity and wonder that I never knew I had. It is one thing to know that the world is full of so many different people, places and ideas but it is another to experience it in real time. You will be surprised with the connections you make to people you thought you had nothing in common with.
5. You'll Grow in Ways You Never Imagined: One of the greatest lessons I've learned from teaching abroad is that personal growth knows no bounds. Living and working in a foreign country will push you out of your comfort zone, challenge your preconceptions, and force you to confront your own biases. So if you are not ready for any of that I suggest you stay home. But in the process, you'll develop a global mindset, and gain a newfound appreciation for the richness of human diversity. Teaching abroad has transformed me into a more open-minded, adaptable, and compassionate individual, and for that, I am forever grateful.
So, there you have it—5 things I have learned while living abroad. Despite the inevitable challenges and uncertainties, the rewards far outweigh the risks. If you're considering making the leap into the world of international education, know that I'm here to help guide you every step of the way. Whether that’s through my blog posts, videos or ebooks. Together, we can explore the world and live our best teacher lives.
