Why I Chose Teaching Abroad Over America: A Journey of Growth and Opportunity

Hey there, fellow teacher friends! As someone who's been living and teaching abroad I often get asked: "Would you ever go back to teaching in the U.S.?" And my answer is a heavy and hard "No!" Now, before you start picturing palm trees and pristine beaches, let me clarify—it's not just about the glitz and glam of expat life. It's about the profound impact that teaching abroad has had on my personal and professional growth, and why I believe it's a journey every educator should consider embarking on.

First and foremost, let's address the elephant in the room: why would I, an American teacher, choose to leave the comfort of home and teach abroad? Well, besides the opportunities for growth and exploration, there are significant concerns about the state of education in America today. From legislation banning certain topics being taught to hide the ugly reality of United States history- to books being banned -to the fact that school shootings have become all too common, the list goes on and on. All of these things leave educators and the students we swore to protect and teach, feeling unsafe and vulnerable.

Additionally, there's a lack of support and resources for teachers, making it increasingly challenging to provide the quality education our students deserve. And let's not forget about the barely-there salaries that often leave teachers questioning their career choice altogether.

Teaching in countries like Qatar and Kuwait has provided me with a sense of security and stability that I simply couldn't find back in the States. Teaching abroad has allowed me to focus on what truly matters: inspiring and empowering my students to reach their fullest potential. And let's not forget about the real-life benefits—the tax-free salary, the freedom to travel, the safety, and the ability to save money while living comfortably abroad.

So, how can you, dear reader (any Bridgerton fans here?), start your own teaching journey abroad? It all begins with a leap of faith and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. Start by researching different countries and regions that pique your interest, considering factors such as language, culture, and educational opportunities. Reach out to fellow educators who have already made the leap and tap into their wealth of knowledge and experience. And don't forget to polish up your resume, gather reference letters, and explore teaching platforms like Teach Away and Teach Anywhere to kickstart your job search.

But to be honest, the most important step of all is to embrace the adventure with an open heart and an open mind. Teaching abroad is not without its challenges, but the rewards, in my opinion, far outweigh the risks. Whether you find yourself in the traditional yet modern city of Doha or the rich cultural landscapes of China, remember that every moment is an opportunity for growth, learning, and discovery.

So, what are you waiting for? The world is waiting for you to make your mark, one classroom at a time. While I may be an American, I made the decision to leave"my home" behind because I believe that teaching abroad offers a safer, more supportive, and ultimately more fulfilling experience for educators. It's a journey that has transformed me into a more adaptable, globally-minded educator, and it's one that I wholeheartedly encourage you to embark on. So pack your bags, renew your passport, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime. The world is your classroom—let's make it count!
