New year, new goals, and for many of you, that goal is teaching abroad in 2025. I see you, dreaming about packing up your life and taking your talents to a new country. I know how scary it can feel—trust me, I’ve been there! But I also know how life-changing this journey can be.

So, if you’ve been wondering where to start, grab your favorite snack, and let’s dive into the basics on how to prepare for teaching abroad in 2025.

Step 1: Get Clear on Your Why

Why do you want to teach abroad? Is it for the adventure? The financial freedom? A fresh start?

Your “why” is what’s going to keep you going when you’re deep in the visa process or googling how to say “hello” in your new host country’s language. Write it down, say it out loud, and let it motivate you every step of the way.

Step 2: Choose Your Dream Destination

Not all teaching abroad experiences are created equal, so think about what’s important to you. Do you want to save money? Explore a new culture? Work in a specific type of school?

For example, if you want to save money, the Middle East might be your best bet. If culture and adventure are your priorities, Asia or Europe could be calling your name.

Step 3: Update Your Résumé

This is your time to shine, sis! Tailor your résumé for international schools and highlight all the outstanding things you've done!

Keep it clean, professional, and easy to read.

Pro tip: Save it as a PDF so it looks polished no matter where you send it.

Step 4: Start Your Job Hunt

Once your résumé is ready, it’s time to find your dream job. There are tons of resources out there, but here are a few of my faves:

Teach Away

Teach Anywhere

Search Associates

Make sure you’re reading reviews about schools and contracts. (We’re not signing anything sketchy in 2025!) And remember, patience is key—your perfect position is out there.

Step 5: Gather Your Documents

Listen, teaching abroad is exciting, but paperwork? Not so much. Still, it’s part of the process.

Every country has its own requirements, so do your research and stay organized.

Step 6: Save, Save, Save!

Moving abroad isn’t free, but it doesn’t have to break the bank either. Start putting money aside to cover things that will be coming up!

Set a realistic budget and stick to it. Even $50 a week adds up fast!

Step 7: Do Your Research

Learn about your destination’s culture, customs, and teaching environment. Watch YouTube videos, read blogs, and join expat Facebook groups. The more you know, the more confident you’ll feel stepping into this new chapter.

Step 8: Start Saying “See You Later”

Leaving your friends and family isn’t easy, but this isn’t goodbye forever—it’s a “see you later.” Start talking to them about your plans and sharing your excitement. You might even inspire someone to visit or follow in your footsteps!

Step 9: Get Your Mindset Right

Teaching abroad isn’t just a physical move—it’s a mental shift. Prepare yourself for growth, challenges, and unforgettable memories. Remember, you’re stepping into a new world, but you’re not alone. People like me are here to help you every step of the way.

Step 10: Take the Leap

At some point, you just have to go for it. Teaching abroad isn’t about having every detail figured out—it’s about being open to the adventure. Trust yourself and trust the process.
