Teaching abroad isn’t just about exploring new countries—it’s about changing your life in ways you never thought possible. Whether you’ve been on the fence about it or you’re just hearing about this idea, let me break it down for you: 2025 is THE year to take the leap and teach abroad.
Here are five reasons why teaching abroad is the ultimate move and why you need to start preparing right now. (Like actually yesterday, but right now is cool too!)
1. Financial Freedom Like Never Before
Imagine getting paid to teach while your rent, utilities, and even your flights are covered. Many teaching abroad positions—especially in the Middle East and Asia—offer incredible salary packages that allow you to save money, pay off debt, or finally take that dream vacation.
I know firsthand how life-changing this can be. When I first started teaching abroad, I was shocked at the things I could do with my money. From saving to traveling, to helping out a friend or family member in need. 2025 could be your year to break free from financial stress (unless you spend it all on brunch!).
2. Explore the World Without Breaking the Bank
We all have that Pinterest board full of travel inspo or that saved folder of TikToks with dreamy destinations. Teaching abroad is the perfect way to make those travel goals a reality—without spending a fortune.
When you’re already living in a different country, travel becomes way more affordable. Want to hop over to Bali for the weekend or explore Paris during your break? It’s totally doable when you’re already abroad. My favorite thing in the world is to be able to explore two or even three countries on a school break! There's nothing like it!
3. Grow Professionally (And Make Your Résumé Shine)
Teaching abroad is not just about the paycheck ( it does help though!) or the passport stamps( these ar nice too!)—it’s also a chance to level up in your career. Working in international schools or teaching English as a second language helps you develop skills like adaptability, communication, and cultural awareness.
Plus, it looks AMAZING on a résumé. Employers love candidates who’ve worked abroad because it shows you can handle challenges, think creatively, and thrive in diverse environments. When I went back home after my first four years in Kuwait, employers were in awe at the fact that I lived abroad. It honestly probably sealed the deal for a few jobs! HA!
4. Build a Global Network
One of the most beautiful things about teaching abroad is the connections you’ll make. You’ll work with colleagues from all over the world, form lifelong friendships, and become part of a global community.
And let’s not forget the students—they’ll teach you just as much as you teach them. My time abroad has introduced me to people who’ve changed my life in ways I never expected, and I know it’ll do the same for you. Plus you'll have a place to say in so many different parts of the world!
5. Rediscover Yourself
This one might sound cliché, but teaching abroad truly is a journey of self-discovery. When you step out of your comfort zone, you learn things about yourself that you didn’t even know were there.
You’ll realize how strong, capable, and resourceful you are. You’ll grow in ways that aren’t possible when you stay in the same place. Teaching abroad isn’t just a career move—it’s a life move. I tell people this all the time- I feel like I am more myself when I live abroad. I challenge myself more, I explore more and I allow myself to be more free. I don't know if its something in the air or just the change of scenery but I step into who I really am.
